Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket: Records, Titles and What Comes Next

Glenn Maxwell has played his last match for Australia. The 38-year-old all-rounder has retired from international cricket, and has also stepped away from first-class and List A cricket with Victoria. He is not leaving the game altogether: Maxwell will keep playing T20 franchise cricket, starting with the Melbourne Stars in the coming Big Bash League, after his contract there was extended to the 2027-28 season.

He had already given up ODIs in June 2025 to focus on the T20 World Cup. That tournament, played in India and Sri Lanka in early 2026, turned out to be his farewell. Australia went out in the group stage, and their final game, against Oman in February, became Maxwell's last for his country. He took two wickets and did not bat.

Why now

Speaking on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he and the selectors had talked openly before and after the World Cup, and had left the door open. With England arriving for a white-ball series that includes a T20I in Melbourne, he admitted he had hoped for a send-off at the MCG, but said he understood the selectors wanted to give young players international experience ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

His body was part of the decision too. Rather than push to be ready for the England series, he chose to treat his knee and spend eight weeks on rehab, so he can get through the T20 tournaments he still wants to play.

A career built on big moments

  • Three World Cups. He won the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2023, and hit the winning runs when Australia won the T20 World Cup final in 2021.
  • The 201 not out. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Maxwell made an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan, rescuing a chase that looked lost while barely able to move because of cramp. It is widely seen as one of the greatest one-day innings ever played.
  • A T20I record. His five T20I hundreds are a world record, shared with Rohit Sharma.
  • Speed of scoring. Across 130 T20Is he scored 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42, and took 51 wickets with his off-spin.
  • A Test hundred in India. He played seven Tests, the last in 2017, and his 104 in Ranchi that year was his only Test century.

What it means for fantasy players

  • No more Maxwell in Australia's international squads. His spot as the finisher who can also bowl a few overs of spin is now open, and the young players picked in his place will be worth watching in the England series.
  • He is still a Big Bash option. Maxwell remains a Melbourne Stars player, and an all-rounder who bats in the top order and bowls can score points in several ways in one match.
  • Watch his fitness. He has just finished a block of knee rehab, so check the confirmed Melbourne Stars XI before making him your captain early in the season.

Maxwell finishes with 286 matches for Australia across the three formats, and some of the most memorable innings of the last decade. Create your team for upcoming matches on Fantasy11.Cricket.
